Vacuumed covers, title pages, and textblock. Removed post-it pieces from text. Cut cloth strips to replace place marker post-its. Photographed during treatment. Vacuumed leaves inside.
Adhesive Repair/Removal

Took old leather off spine using dental tool. Lifted all residue from spine with dental tool and methyl cellulose (10%). Lifted original leather and press with spatula. Removed seals from covers, and removed paste-downs.

Glued piece of mesh fabric with Jade R and Beva gel (2:1) onto spine. Trimmed surplus mesh. Hinged three sheets, trimmed surplus mending strips. Lined part of sheet after removing residue backing. Mended tears, humidified and pressed again.
Humidification

Vacuumed three single sheets, humidified with water and alcohol (by chamber with steam). Flattened three single sheets. Humidified again and pressed sheets to remove part of backing, pressed all sheets. Removed residue of backing by localized humidification. Used Gore-Tex to humidify sheet again. Cleaned tears and pressed again. Trimmed off mending strips. Humidified covers. Mended tears of sheets.
General Repair

Polished the cover boards with teflon bone folder. Sized boards with methyl cellulose. Fixed the corners with wheat paste and clips. Removed backing of label. Put label in tray with Pellon layer. Used fingers to rub and peel off the backing. Fixed corners with wheat paste again. Mended tears again. Reattached leaves to book block. Sanded boards and filled holes and losses with Modostuc. Peeled the cords and uneven surface of the boards. Sanded until smooth.

Strengthened spine using Japanese paper and paste. Cut piece of fabric to hold case onto spine. Put case on spine first, then apply paste on fabric to cover the case. Wrapped book using leather and bandage. Nipped the Bible into press and let stand. Applied paste to leather on spine area. Put leather on spine and rubbed. Wrapped back in bandage. Shaped the board. Wrapped the rest of book.

Lined flyleaf using same paper. Measure size of paste-down end paper. Pasted another pasted-down paper. Pasted the label on inner side of cover board. Pasted original remaining leather onto spine.

Paste endsheets on textblock and press them. Assembled book press and pressed book. Fixed plastic wrap to spine of book. Used Japanese paper to make case for the spine to have hollow back. Pasted many layers of Japanese paper on plastic wrap and rubbed with bone folder and stiff brush. Pressed case and let it dry. Removed case from spine and drew arrow in bottom part. Used modostuc to shape cover board and sanded. Strengthened end sheets by sewing them to spine. Pricked end sheet and spine with long needle. Waxed the thread and sewed the book using saddle stitch.

Measured size of book and boards, attached the boards to text block. Applied wheat starch paste on the book repair tape. Put tape on two sides of board and rubbed tape. Attached one side of tape to end sheet and other side to spine. Extended book repair tape using linen tape to strengthen spine. Pared edge of leather, shaped board using knife, sand paper and modostuc.
Rehousing

Used pre-made blueboard box and extended height using strips of blueboard and remay tape. Glued ethafoam blocks to create bumper corners for tray. Laminated two sheets of blueboard with 1" margin of book. Cut out slots from tray for single length of twill tape to run through and create handles to lift book on tray. Secured handles with sewn on velcro strips. Cut out slots from tray for twill tape ribbons to hold book in place on top and bottom. Adhered volara to lid of box to protect book cover. Created belt of twill tape to secure lid to bottom of box.
