Damage Repair
Consolidation

Brushed with soft brushes to remove granular paint flakes from surface. Applied methylcelllose (4%) to surface to consolidate. Vacuumed once dry and will look into further cleaning methods.

Placed 8 small blocks of agar gels with (2x) EDTA; DPTA; bicine; surfonic JL-80x across background soiled areas to test surface cleaning potential. Checked at three times throughout day (11am, 2pm, 5pm), however contact btwn agar and painting was distrubed late in the day, requiring a second attempt. Larger cubes of all four solutions of agar (2x) placed around dirty background areas under cube weights. Left to dehydrate until Mon 11/12 to allow for capillary action.
Consolidation

Precise consolidation of the flaking paint with a brush using 4% methylcellulose in water.

Retouching with watercolors, filling. Removing in painting on the lower right corner using water and filling with clear gesso.

Prepared 3% regalrez varnish in shellsol D38. Added 1% silica to regalrez varnish. Varnished artwork with 3% regalrez in shellsol D38 + Tinurin 292 + silica. Put artwork under weight.
Retouching

Began smoothing background appearance using wash of thinned watercolors to match what was completed on opposite scroll.
General Cleaning

Removed wooden rods and cleaned edges. Applied regalrez 3% in shellsol with 1% tinuvin and 1& fumed silica on entire surface. Cleaned brass on rods with metal cleaner and honeypot wood.
